The 50s music classic oldies.Do you remember the 45 RPM records ofthe 50's If you had a player that did not have a large hole to play them you had an insert. Record players in those days were small and compact. They had one turn table and a needle, with a three speed knob on the front of them. You had a real good one, if you had one that automatically dropped the records one by one to be played.Some of the artists that were popular then were Little Richard, The Imperials, the Shirels, the Platters, Dion and the Belmonts, Frankie Valle and the Four Seasons, Four Tops, Temptations, and the Supremes. Every teenager knew the do wa for each song that these group sang.Some of the solo artists were Elvis, Brenda Lee, Leslie Gore, Dion, and Frankie Avalon. They could belt out a song that the listener could repeat the lyrics and they mean something.Dance bands were popular also. Bill Haley and the Comets started the twist, others to follow with the Peppermint Twist, the Limbo, the Mashed Potato, and the Stroll. Do you remember these?Poodle skirts, rolled up jeans for the boys, long shirts, and ducktail haircuts were popular. The pony tail danced when the girls did.Dates were when three girls and three boys went out. It did not matter who you were with, as you all dated together. A trip to the corner drug store to have a malt or an ice cream soda was a good way to mingle with the friends and classmates.Cars in my neighborhood were a rarity. Most dates involve walking and holding hands, and going to that drug store for soda.Music was everywhere. Transistor radios played from front steps and porches. These little radios could be plugged into the ear for privacy. The 50s generation was a musically inclined era and will be remembered for the wonderful groups that entertained the teens of this time period.
